HOW TO: HEM LEATHER

Leather is one of my favourite things to wear so when I found a calf length leather skirt from an opshop for $3 so I obviously snatched that up and took it home. I decided that I would, most likely, never wear it at the length that it was so choose to cut the bottom off and make it shorter and its so easy!

Unless most fabrics in which you have to stitch the hem, either with a machine which leaves a visable seam on the outside of the skirt, or by hand which can take aggggges, leather is different, you can just glue the hem up! Its great because the finish is so nice, with no stitch line and its so easy to get the hem even. Now, I wanted to get  my skirt hemmed asap because I wanted to wear it on New Years, I just used a normal stationary glue, which probably isn't the best to use but it worked great for me, however you can get special leather glue or a thing called rubber cement if you want to do it properly.

Once you've figured out where you want to hem it to, whether it be a skirt, a jacket or pants, cut the excess off but leaving about two centimetres on which to put the glue and fold up. Once you've cut it, apply the glue evenly and try to cover all parts that will be involved in the hem and fold it upwards to the length you want.  It does get a bit messy and glue gets all over your fingers so try not to get glue on other parts of the garment.

After you stuck the hem place something heavy on top of the garment, I used my textbooks (at least they're useful for something, right?) and leave it there until the glue has dried.

If the garment has a lining, you'll also need to hem that. Make it a little shorter the bottom of the leather so that it is not visible when you wear it. This you can just do on a sewing machine as it is not visible when the garment is on so no need to worry about visible stitching!

I am so in love with this skirt, it was such a wonderful find. I hope this was helpful for you all!
Love, Ellie xoxo
